Hughes Group (Mushrooms)

Power Factor Correction Unit

Established in 1964, Hughes Group is a prominent supplier of mushrooms to major retailers across the UK and Ireland, producing an impressive 300 tonnes every single week. Deeply rooted in the Northern Irish and East Yorkshire countryside, Hughes Group is passionately committed to protecting the environment for both the present and future generations.

The company had invested heavily in renewable energy, with both solar and biomass used to heat water for the production lines, and approached us to ask if they can do anything further to reduce their environmental impact and reduce energy costs.

Having assessed their data, we immediately identified an issue with their Power Factor and recommended they install Power Factor Correction to significantly improve their electrical efficiency.  During our analysis we identified a Power Factor of 0.86, leading to significant electrical losses and financial implications.

We recommended a 300kVAr Standard PFC unit be installed to correct the Power Factor to >0.99.

These recommendations were implemented across 3-days, with no disruption to the client’s production schedule to realise the savings indicated above.
